Moon 12 Blue

Moon 12 Blue is not a tacky rubber. It pairs a grippy, non-tacky topsheet with a tensioned blue sponge — the pack calls it Max Tense — so it works through friction rather than tack, and gives more speed and throw straight out of the packet than Yinhe Mercury II.

It is soft and forgiving, which is why it is most often used on the backhand. We stock it in medium hardness at 2.15 mm.

It suits you if you want a grippy, tensioned sheet with pace for less effort, on a budget, or a soft backhand to pair with a Chinese forehand.

It does not suit you if you want tack and the heavy, low arc that comes with it. The Hurricane 3 Neo Commercial is the classic tacky sheet, the Yinhe Mercury II is the gentle way into tack, and the Dignics 09C is tack with this kind of speed, at a price.

Two thin coats on the sponge, one on the blade. Let every coat dry completely clear before the next — a milky surface means it is not ready, and trapped moisture is a common cause of bubbles.

• Use a water-based glue. DHS No. 15 Glue is the one we stock.
• Roll from the centre outwards to push air to the edges.
• Trim with a sharp blade along the edge of the wood, or with sharp scissors — curved ones make the rounded edge easiest.
• Between sessions, use the protective film or another topsheet cover, so dust stays off and the tack lasts longer.

Moon 12 Blue already has a tensioned sponge, so it plays fast without boosting. If you do boost it, keep to a single thin coat.

One thin coat is enough for most players. Leave the sheet weighted flat for 12 to 24 hours so it expands evenly, then glue and mount as normal. More coats increase the effect and shorten how long the sheet lasts.

Boosting is irreversible, so it is worth playing the sheet as it comes for a few sessions first, to have a baseline to judge against.
