The oil soaks into the open cells of the sponge and makes it expand. Because the topsheet is bonded to the sponge and cannot expand with it, the sheet domes upward and the whole assembly ends up under permanent tension — the effect the old speed glues produced, achieved slowly instead of instantly.
A tensioned sheet throws the ball higher and faster for the same stroke, and the sponge feels slightly softer. Its main effect is on speed and arc rather than spin, which still comes mostly from the topsheet and your stroke.
So a booster will not fix a spin problem. It makes a fast rubber faster and a high-throw rubber higher.
- Work on an unglued sheet, sponge side up, in a ventilated room.
- One thin, even coat with a soft brush. Thin is the whole skill — pooling causes uneven doming.
- Weigh the sheet down flat at the edges, or it will curl as it expands.
- Leave it 12 to 24 hours, as the pack directs. The sheet will visibly dome; that is the effect working.
- Glue and mount as normal once the doming has settled.
One coat is enough for most players; the pack’s directions say one or two. More coats increase the effect and shorten the life of the sheet, so start with one and judge from there.
Keep it off skin and away from eyes, use it in a ventilated space, and store it sealed away from heat and out of reach of children.
A boosted sheet keeps changing over the first few sessions as the oil settles into the sponge, so judge it after that rather than on day one.
The effect then fades gradually. How quickly depends on how much you play and how many coats you applied.
Boosting is not reversible, so if you want a baseline to compare against, play the sheet as it comes for a few sessions first.
